Herbaria in China : Past , Present and Future

Abstract
The present paper briefly outlines the development with statistical summaries of the Chinese herbaria. Well established herbaria, being repositories of dried plant specimens gathered from far and wide, provide valuable resources to both basic and applied taxonomic researches. Discussing of maintenance of herbaria, the author highlights some of the problems such as the lack of trained manpower, inadequate funding and the emergence of many challenging modern disciplines. Recommendations and suggestions for future improvement of the situation are discussed.
