Reproductive characters (e.g. inflorescence, petal, stamen, stigma, and seed) on 35 species of Asian Geranium were reviewed to discuss evolutionary trends and relation ship. Subgenus Geranium has sculptured mericarp, and attached awn on to the mericarp, and awn is bound to the rostrum and at the time of seed dispersal. However, the mericarp sculpture is absent in subgenus Robertium and the awn is separated from rostrum and mericarp at the time of seed dispersal. Subgenus Geranium can be divided into two sections, Geranium and Tuberosa, based on the flower size, presence of the bristle of mericarp, attachment of awn and rostrum, and awn shape on seed dispersal. Subgenus Robertium was divided into three sections, Ruberta, Trilopha, and Brachiodes according to the petal shape, stigma shape, presence of awn abaxial hair, distribution pattern of perianth hair, and presence of cleistogamous flower. Based on the results, it was thought that subgenus Geranium was developed to maximize the efficiency of seed dispersal mechanism and regarded as more advanced group compared with subgenus Geranium. |
