The Palynological Study on the Korean Polygonatum ( Liliaceae )
Chang Gee Jang, Yun Shik Kim
Abstract
Pollen grains of 16 Korean and three foreign taxa of Polygonatum were examined with the light and the scanning electron microscopes, and the palynological key to sections and series was provided. Pollen grains of all taxa were monosulcate and generally subprolate, but grain size, exine thickness, surface sculpturing, lumina size and lumina number per the unit area, the ratio of tectum part, and pollen fertility were variable. Palynological characters were, however, inappropriate to become diagnostic characters in recognizing species within the genus. Pollen grains of this genus became smaller in the size and wider in the open tectum part than those of other genera within the tribe Polygonateae. Pollen fertility was high in taxa growing in an open habitat and an area of lower human interference, and within a given species, the pollen fertility of a population differed from each other depending on the regional variation.
