Abstract
Dystaenia takeshimana, endemic to Ullung Island off the east coast of Korean Peninsula, has evolved from its continental relative, D. ibukiensis endemic to Japanese Archipelago, to the direction of increase in size, especially, plant height, inflorescence and leaf. D. takeshimana is regarded at the initial stage of morphological divergence from the fact that major external qualitative morphologies including pollen morphology are the same as D. ibukiensis. No variation in chromosome number has occurred between two species. D. takeshimana shows very limited range of variation of leaf morphology and serration on the leaf margin as compared with D. ibukiensis, which implies island endemic can be originated by founder principle. Distinct morphological divergence between the two species has occurred in morphology of cell wall of abaxial leaf surface.
